LEADERS FOR TOMORROW - BE PEOPLE SMART

Interpersonal intelligence is the ability to understand and interact effectively with others.  It involves effective verbal and nonverbal communication, the ability to note distinctions among others, sensitivity to the moods and temperaments of others, and the ability to entertain multiple perspectives.  Teachers, social workers, actors, and politicians all exhibit interpersonal intelligence.  Young adults with this kind of intelligence are leaders among their peers, are good at communicating, and seem to understand others’ feelings and motives.

Anish Joseph:
“ I have developed over the years a whole group of important people, people important to me that I consider mentors. Now, they may be t he gardener in the estate down the road. They may be a farmer who milks his cows. They may be a very special professor. It may be someone I’ve never met, but only read about . . . like Garcia Marquez. One of my dreams is to meet him. But those are my mentors. George Eliot, the great novelist. Jane Austen is a mentor of mine, in terms of language. So, I’ve informally constructed this structure in my life of mentors.” -- Martha Stewart

Anish Joseph:
“People need role models at every stage of their lives . . . not just when they’re kids. Don’t expect a role model to come along all by him or herself. T here are plenty of classy people out there who want to help. Instead of waiting for somebody to take you under their wing, go out there and find a good wing to climb under.” -- Dave Thomas, Founder of Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers

"Mentoring is to support and encourage people to manage their own learning in order that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be."
